We all get screen printed tees, so here’s a fun way to personalize one of them. Just be sure to check with your recruitment chair before you start shredding this year’s shirt!

Here’s what you’ll need: scissors, beads, and a shirt (that’s it!). Make sure the opening in the beads are not too small or large.

Cut up the shirt from the bottom (about 1″ wide, 2.5″ vertical). Slip the fringe through the bead. If it becomes troublesome, use a paperclip end to help push it through. Then, tie a simple knot (in varying lengths, if you prefer) to hold the bead in place.

And there you have it! Come on, that was almost too easy, right?

Challenge: Bring your own eco-friendly reusable shopping bags when you purchase groceries or household items. Reusable bags can often be purchased at check-out if you don’t have one already!

Reason: Billions of plastic grocery bags are used and discarded each year to end up in landfills, litter the environment, or kill marine animals who mistake the floating bags for food. From their manufacture to their disposal, plastic grocery bags have a bigger impact on our environment than many people think. Reusable bags, created with eco-friendly products, are an easy alternative.

Whether you’re planning a simple movie night with your sisters or hosting a campus-wide screening, here are three films with a powerful message for all of us:

Food, Inc. reveals the unflattering truth about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. http://www.foodincmovie.com/

Miss Representation

Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. <a href"http://www.missrepresentation.org/">http://www.missrepresentation.org/

An internationally recognized movement, documentary and school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness, that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl “crime.” http://www.kindcampaign.com/

Thanks to Courtney Huggins, Kappa Delta, for sharing this event with us!

Last week, the Beta Zeta chapter of Kappa Delta held a pampering spa day for Girl Scouts of the USA. The event started out with healthy snacks inspired by the food pyramid, providing sisters with an opportunity to talk to the girls about nutrition and healthy eating.

After a fun nutrition quiz, the girls then made their own homemade avocado masks. Many girls were excited to use their hands to mix the avocado, egg yolk, and honey together before applying it to their face.

A Kappa Delta sister and Girl Scout apply their homemade avocado face masks to cleanse their pores.

While the masks worked on clearing pores, the girls exfoliated their hands and received a manicure from a Kappa Delta sister. The event ended with the perfect spa experience – face masks on, nails drying, cucumbers over the eyes, and relaxing music playing in the background.

Kappa Delta’s partnership with the Girl Scouts of the USA helps to reinforce shared values of integrity, friendship, and girl leadership. The Beta Zeta chapter hosts events with Girls Scouts at least once a month, creating a special environment where sisters can build a mentoring relationship with the girls.

After two weeks of holding our breath and crossing our fingers, Lilly Pulitzer has finally announced which sororities it will design prints for in 2012. Although initially leading us to believe the “2012 Print Class” would include only three organizations, two additional ones were included in the set. The five sororities selected were:

Alpha Xi Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
Phi Mu
Sigma Kappa
Pi Beta Phi

Not long after the announcement, voters freely expressed either their approval or disappointment in the sororities chosen. Many began to question whether their votes had even mattered, pointing to Lilly Pulitzer’s disclaimer that it “reserves the right to determine the (3) final sororities to receive custom prints and has sole discretion over the final determination.”

Above all sororities still awaiting a print with Lilly, my heart breaks the most for Zeta Tau Alpha who fell into a false sense of security after they were acknowledged as the leading contender on the Lilly Pulitzer Facebook page.

It would be unsurprising to find the “2012 Print Class” winners were chosen strategically to include a mix of both large and medium sized sororities. Keeping major players in the game ensures the Lilly Pulitzer sorority prints will continue to be a coveted and promoted opportunity each year.

For those still waiting, Lilly Pulizer has announced that it will once again expand its sorority print collection in 2013.

Every breakthrough chapter needs a clear and common goal for its members to unite behind. Without one, conflict arises as members are determined to carry out their own personal agendas for the chapter. What will bring your organization together?

Someone has told the leadership that they should have goals. So they have them. But instead of coming up with a single, inspirational focus for the chapter, they come up with a list of goals scattered between officers – reaching quota, collecting dues on time, maintaining a high GPA.

As the year goes on, these “chapter” goals become personal goals for the officers, who each believe that the one relevant to their position is of the highest priority. A surplus of mandatory events pop up – academic workshops, service events, sisterhood events – that overwhelm the chapter and cause some members to check out mentally or resign entirely.

The first step to creating a revolutionary goal is to provide every member with the opportunity to define it. It should generate from the changes your members would like to see made in the chapter and can passionately support, not ones inspired by chapter evaluation standards or other criteria.
Next, identify steps to help you achieve that goal and ways for members to contribute individually. How will you measure your chapter’s progress throughout the year? What accomplishments will you be able to celebrate?

For example, if your chapter’s goal was to improve its image on campus, it may host more events on campus (i.e. outreach, service, sisterhood), explore social media outlets, and support the events of other organizations.

It is the responsibility of the leadership to make sure the chapter’s goals aren’t just a routine exercise at the beginning of each new term, but are communicated to the chapter all throughout the year. Celebrate and acknowledge your chapter’s progress throughout the year as milestones are met!

When “sisterhood” becomes merely another chapter buzzword – “there will be a mandatory sisterhood event this Friday” – it diminishes what that powerful concept can really achieve. The Fraternal Revolution series is aimed at helping fraternity and sorority officers transform their chapter to unite behind a common goal, overcome barriers, and achieve excellence.

Unfortunately, many chapters take shortcuts to find brotherhood and sisterhood – hazing new members, celebrating with alcohol, and making all chapter events mandatory instead of catering events to its members. Change within any organization is never easy. Executive officers need to be committed to overcoming barriers to reach this level of excellence and inspire chapter members to renew their commitment in your organization. The Fraternal Revolution begins in the hearts of chapter members determined to bring their chapter to a higher standard and come together as one.
